Sewer Manhole Odours
Sewer manhole odours are caused by a combination of factors. In manholes at the end of rising mains, long retention times can lead to septic conditions, resulting in the formation of H2S in solution. When this effluent reaches an aerated discharge point, it diffuses out of solution and into the atmosphere. The level of odour experienced is directly proportional to the level of H2S in the effluent stream and the level of turbulence in the well.
The best way to control sewer manhole odours is through chemical dosing of iron salts, namely ferrous or ferric chloride, directly into the main, upstream of the discharge point.
