Magnesium Hydroxide Dosing

Magnesium Hydroxide is commonly used in sewage systems for pH adjusment (acid neutralisation), coagulation and odour control. Being an alkali, it is commonly used in sewage systems where low pH is a known issue.

At lower pH levels (pH <6), the predominant sulphide species in septic sewer is H2S which is highly volatile and likely to be released downstream as a gas. As the pH level is increased, the sulphide species change to become predominantly HS-.. At a pH of 8-9, the predominant sulphide species is HS- which is relatively stable and more likely to remain in solution.

This pH adjustment can result in a dramatic reduction in odour release from the site as well as a reduction in damaging corrosion on the infrastructure. Some other benefits of Magnesium Hydroxide dosing are:

  • Naturally buffers at pH 9.5
  • Non-hazardous
  • Can be dosed automatically
  • Friendly to biological systems
