Ferrogard Iron Salts Dosing FAQs
How does Ferrogard dosing work?
Most sewer odour problems are caused by the presence of hydrogen sulphide (H2S) gas, formed by the anaerobic breakdown of sulphates in solution to form sulphides. These sulphides then become available to bond with hydrogen to become H2S gas.
The Ferrogard® Dosing System utilises ferrous chloride (Fe2+) to reduce sewage odours by reducing the formation of H2S gas. As sulphides are released into solution, the iron (Fe2+) in the ferrous chloride solution immediately binds to the sulphide and removes it from solution by forming an insoluble precipitate. This reaction is irreversible and dramatically reduces the formation of odorous sulphur-based compounds.

How does Ferrogard dosing protect against corrosion?
The principal 'wetted' substrate present in sewer networks is concrete, which is corroded by sulphuric acid formed by the oxidation of H2S by Thiobacillus spp. bacteria present on the sewer walls. Ferrous chloride reduces sewer corrosion by reducing the formation of H2S, resulting in a significant reduction in the formation of sulphuric acid on the sewer walls.
How can Ferrogard dosing be introduced into my system?
Ferrogard® dosing can be introduced in a variety of ways and controls can be designed to suit your specific requirements. The most effective way to introduce Ferrogard® dosing into a sewer system is by dosing directly into the rising main. Rising main dosing allows the dose rate to be regulated by the sewer flow and this dosing mechanism can be controlled either by a direct connection between the OCS dosing pump and the sewer pump or by utilising an inline flow meter to communicate with the OCS dosing controls (commonly used for pressure sewer systems).
Who currently uses Ferrogard dosing?
Ferrous and ferric chloride dosing is now the principal odour and corrosion control technology adopted by Sydney Water, Hunter Water and Gosford Council for their wastewater networks. Many regional councils have also implemented this technology using the Ferrogard® Dosing System.
What does OCS offer with the Ferrogard Dosing System?
Design and Installation of Ferrogard® Dosing Systems
Odour Control Systems can design and install a dosing unit to meet your specific requirements. OCS dosing units range in size from 200 litres to 25,000 litres, giving us the flexibility to design an odour control strategy that will suit both your requirements and your budget.
Service and Maintenance of Ferrogard® Dosing Systems
Odour Control Systems' team of skilled technicians can take care of every detail, from design and installation through delivery of product, to periodic and breakdown maintenance so that time commitment required by you is minimal.
Compliance Monitoring
At Odour Control Systems we fully understand that if you install a system for odour control, you expect to see results. OCS can assist in developing and implementing a compliance monitoring package to ensure that you get the best possible result from your investment.
